How to Organize Your Home for the New Year
With a new year comes the urge to start fresh in every aspect of our lives: we resolve to eat healthy, workout, and clean house. And this shouldn’t be a surprise, as maintaining a clean home can actually make you healthier. Studies have shown that people with clean homes were physically healthier and more active than their messy counterparts. If that’s not enough to convince you to conquer the clutter in every room in your home for the New Year, here are some tips for every room:
Kitchen
- Sort all glass and plastic Tupperware and throw away anything that’s missing a lid.
- Stack all of your canned food by category.
- Go through all your food and throw away anything that’s expired, including leftovers in the fridge. If there’s any non-perishable food that you know you won’t eat, consider donating it to a local food pantry.
- Organize your spices in alphabetical order. Bonus tip: sort them on their very own spice rack.
Living Room
- Find all the spaces that the clutter piles up, like coffee tables and consoles. Consider storing these items in baskets instead- this keeps them accessible while removing the clutter from sight.
- Recycle or donate any old magazines and books to your location library.
- If you have TV and music subscriptions, it may be time to donate your old CDs, DVDs, and VCRs. You can also sell these online.
Office
- Figure out a good filing system for all of your documents. This is a great way to stay organized and keep the paper clutter from building up. Set up online auto-payments and electronic statements to prevent the paper buildup.
- Scan all of your documents into a digitizing service or shred all the paper you no longer need.
- Recycle or throw away all your receipts.
- Recycle manuals, especially big ones that can easily be downloaded as a PDF.
Bathroom
- Throw out any expired products and prescriptions.
- Toss out any old hair products, hair ties, bobby pins that can no longer be used.
- Clean out all your makeup brushes.
- Replaced old, dirty bath towels with new ones. Donate old ones to an animal shelter.
Bedroom
- Clear off your nightstand.
- Buy under-the-bed storage boxes to store your clean and unused bedding.
- Keep a small recycle or trash bun for any clutter that might end up on your nightstand.
- Toss out any stained blankets or bedsheets.
- Use over-the-door hooks to store clothes and towels.
